The central theme of Leviticus is holiness: to be holy because God is holy, and He has chosen us and separated us unto Him. The book of Leviticus points us to Christ, foreshadowing of what would be ultimately fulfilled in Him.
In Leviticus 1, God spoke to Moses at the Tent of Meeting, the Tabernacle. In the New Testament, we learn that Christ is our Tabernacle. Furthermore, as believers, we are the temple of God, where the Spirit of God resides. In every genuine Christian assembly, where believers gather faithfully in the name of Christ, we will hear God speak.
Our offering must meet God's standard. It must be perfect and without blemish. Animals that are deformed or blemished, and intended to be discarded, will not be acceptable for the burnt offering.
In Hebrews 9:11-14, we find a profound truth: Christ is the Perfect Tent, the Perfect High Priest, and the Perfect Offering. This offering, devoid of any blemish, is the sole requisite for the atonement of our sins.
Christ is the only offering we need; He is our daily burnt offering, sacrificed on the cross for our transgressions.
There can be no more valuable, precious, or spotless offering than the Lamb of God Himself. Only He can satisfy God's requirements.
In accordance with Leviticus 1, when the offerer lays their hand on the burnt offering, it signifies their identification with the offering, and thus, it is accepted as atonement on their behalf. Likewise, Jesus, the Lamb of God, took upon Himself our sins and suffered in our place. Through His sacrifice, we receive the benefits of expiation, the removal of our sins, and propitiation, the appeasement of God's righteous wrath.
In the outer court, the burnt offering was a common sight, presented morning and evening for the atonement of sins. Similarly, Christians should incorporate daily confession into their worship, seeking forgiveness and cleansing from God.
The offering culminates in a fragrant aroma that is acceptable and pleasing to the Lord. Similarly, our daily worship should ascend as a sweet fragrance, in a manner that is acceptable to God.
